May 5th is a national holiday in Japan called Children's Day (Kodomo-no-hi). In principle, it celebrates both girls and boys, but historically it is the Boys' Day (as March 3d is Girls' Festival called Hina Matsuri). On this day, families with sons display sometimes samurai dolls (Gogatsu Ningyo, or May Dolls) to celebrate Japanese heroes and warrior values and to wish their children health and fighting spirit. I found a nice exemple of Gogatsu Ningyo display. These are 100 year old dolls made in Meiji period (1868-1912).
I like the individuality of their facial features, and the garment details are amazing too!
I know it's a weapon, but so cute one! ^-^
It seems he has lost one fang in a battle :
Looking down on him like this, you have the impression that he just wants to be adopted ^-^
Children's Day is also known for carp-shaped streamers, Koinobori, but I haven't seen them yet this year..
